My Dad wanted a boy so bad, he was really disappointed when i was born. I would have been named Atticus, too, in the early 1980's! (Everybody else hated it.) Instead i got stuck with a top ten girl name. I'm not say i would want to have been named Atticus, but Attika would have been nice. (He soon realized that girls were just as much fun, and we played wiffle ball and all sorts of things growing up and i never got the girls do this and boys do that thing.) Anyway, I have known at least one boy Ashley, Shannon, Lindsay or Lesley, and Casey. I think i read earlier (a later post) that Joyce was originally a boys name. I realize that some names are originally unisex, but i rather think the boy name for girls fad/trend has actually been happening for quite some time. I do think people should speak up if they don't like such and such a name for a boy or a girl, but to say that the parents must have really wanted boys seems rather childish and downright mean.

I'm really glad that Eleanor passed the keychain test.^.^ Having a slight tendency to favour "A" names myself, i find it quite interesting that the sample does as well. My favs out of those are Aaliyah, Alexis, Annika, Avery (prefer it for a boy), Mackenzie, Madison (one of our kitti cats is named Madison, after the city, it always makes me smile), Maya, Talia, Tiana (prefer as nn for Tatiana), Damien, and Malachi.

Personally, I prefer AnneMarie or SamanthaRose over both alternatives. Although it does have some of the same computer problems as the hyphen. Nymbler automatically changes them to Annemarie and Samantharose.
As far as the hyphenated last name thing goes, I like the idea of it, but it seems like one of the names tends to get dropped. My fiancé and I didn't want to use just one or the other so we toyed with the idea of using something completely different, but decided against it. Now we are planning on smushing our last names. For example, if they were Robot and Grimm, they would become Grimbot.

charlotte vera--your very name is a beautiful Othodox saints name!! Vera (Faith) was the eldest sister of Hope and Love and their mother Sophia watched as the three held hands and were martyred for their love of Christ and desire for His eternal beauty, rather than the fleeting beauty of the world. Look her up! these women are highly revered in Russia.

I was born in Nicaragua. My father is from the US and my mom is from Nicaragua. And in all my Nicaraguan ID where the 2 last names are required (including my birth certificate) my father's name always comes first. So to hear the discussion that the mother's name should come first seems backwards to me! Interesting how our cultural background shapes our thinking.

I am now expecting my first child. My husband is Canadian and I now live in Canada with him. I am now looking for names that are not "too strange" in English or in Spanish. That way both sides of the family will be able to to pronounce them!

Hi Emmy Jo! I don't know if you remember me or not, but I wrote you a while back about naming our baby. Congratulations on your baby boy! Being a mommy is the most amazing thing. We ended up having a baby girl, on Labor Day, and named her Gabrielle Lynn. We chose Gabrielle, since it means woman of God, and she is my miracle that saved my life.

I really like it! Nice find. Definitely not my usual style, but it is intriguing.

The school I work at just now is absolutely saturated with Olivers - it's become incredibly boring to me now so this is a nice twist.

I must say that recently I have came to absolutely love Arthur, and it's all your fault. It now sits on my top five boy names, in the third spot.

My list now is Paul, Isley, Arthur, Henry, and Klaus for boys.

I have also came to love Susannah, although I have yet to add that to my list. May as a middle.

Great post! I've personally always liked the name Rose and Jacob - and luckily they were a bit popular before Twilight was released! I agree, people naming their kids Edward & Bella or Romeo and Juliet would just be odd...

Good luck with your boy!
